In this talk Dr. Hsu will talk about two extreme weather events: 1) the 2021 North American cold snap that caused the worst energy infrastructure failure in Texas state history, leaving millions without electricity or heating amid freezing temperatures, 2) the 2020 Siberian heatwave that produced highest temperature ever recorded above the Arctic Circle. These two extreme events are characterized by large-scale background circulation anomalies that were manifestation of both natural variability and a warming trend.
